Course Outline

Let's grow together!

Growing Your Good Life is a 9-month course (March–November) consisting of nine modules that follow the the seasonal rhythm of one full growing season on the farm.

The course consists of 9 full-day sessions occurring 1x per month on Saturdays. The first session will be on March 29, 2025. Each module is a mix of hands-on training, guided coursework, community dialogue, and introspective reflection.

We provide additional opportunities to drop-in for weekly work sessions on Wednesdays throughout the season. For those desiring a more hands-on approach to learning, these sessions are meant to provide a deeper understanding of particular farming practices from week-to-week.

The growing season on the farm is more than a practical experience—it’s a metaphor for your own personal growth and community building. Each stage of the farming process reflects a stage in your personal journey, offering insights, wisdom, and inspiration for growth.

Unit 01 — Cultivate

MARCH – MAY

In order to prepare yourself for transformation, you must cultivate the right conditions for growth. Just as a farmer carefully prepares the soil before planting seeds, ensuring the plants have the best chance to thrive, this stage in the Growing Your Good Life course is all about creating the ideal conditions for your personal growth, by grounding yourself in mindful awareness, planting your seeds of intention, rooting yourself in your values, and being open to the possibility of transformation.

MODULE 01

GROUND

SATURDAY March 29, 2025

In this module you'll be introduced to our tried-and-true holistic framework that will support your growth throughout this entire experience. You'll participate in a shared garden planning process for your growing season at Fairhaven. You will also ground yourself in mindful practices that you will come back to throughout the course.

MODULE 02

SEED

SATURDAY April 19, 2025

This module will focus on planting seeds, literally and metaphorically! By cultivating the right conditions and planting your seeds of intention, you'll orient yourself toward growth and transformation.

MODULE 03

ROOT

SATURDAY May 17, 2025

By now your seedlings—much like your intentions—will have developed strong roots. During this module, you will participate in preparing the ground for planting these young seedlings to give them a chance to grow. In this stage, the values you've identified, and the intentions you've set for your growth will begin to take root as well.

Unit 02 — Tend

JUNE – AUGUST

After seeds have been planted, the garden requires tending to ensure the best results. During this stage in Growing Your Good Life, you'll connect more deeply with the land as you tend to the crops you've helped seed and plant. By nurturing these plants, appreciating their unique qualities and beauty, learning their rhythms, and watching them grow you will simultaneously begin to notice and appreciate your own process of growth. This stage is all about being present, understanding the interconnected web of life that is present in the soil, allowing the garden to impart the wisdom it has to offer you.

MODULE 04

OBSERVE

SATURDAY June 14, 2025

In this module, you and other participants will be observing the plants in the garden, monitoring their growth, and learning what conditions and actions are necessary to support their continued growth. By observing and tending to the plants in this way, you will develop confidence in your skills, deepen your relationship with the land, and begin to understand your important role as a land steward. At this stage in the process, you'll also observe and monitor your personal growth and development in a safe and supportive environment alongside a community who will be cheering you on.

MODULE 05

NOURISH

SATURDAY July 19, 2025

Through the process of observation, you will have determined what conditions and actions are necessary to support the continued growth and flourishing of the plants you are tending. You'll be taking actions to improve the conditions in the garden: weeding, watering, monitoring for pests and signs of disease, and nourishing the plants with compost, and learning about the benefits of cover crops for soil fertility. You'll also be introduced to holistic management methods, decision-making tools, and mindful practices to support your personal goals. This module is all about monitoring your growth, reinforcing your values, and aligning your decisions and actions with the life you've set out to cultivate during this course. As you nourish and tend to the plants in the field you'll be nourished too!

MODULE 06

BLOOM

SATURDAY August 16, 2025

In this module you will take time to appreciate the garden in full bloom. This is the time in the growing season when all the planting is complete and the crops you've cultivated will be returning the gift of reciprocity by blooming and bearing fruit for you to enjoy. You'll learn appropriate harvesting techniques and post-harvest handling. You'll relish in the fruits of your labor by learning how to enjoy the vegetables, herbs, and flowers you've grown. There will be lessons in food preparation, cooking, baking, and floral arranging! This will be a time to enjoy the farm and reflect on how it has helped you grow and bloom!

Unit 03 — Grow

SEPTEMBER – NOVEMBER

During this stage participants will savor and celebrate the abundance in the garden. You'll experience the magic of watching the crops that you have seeded and tended to come to fruition. This stage in Growing Your Good Life is all about slowing down, harvesting the fruits of your labor, and savoring the abundance of the garden. If you've followed the process faithfully, and tended to your goals mindfully, this is also when the seeds of your intentions will bear fruit and you'll experience the transformation and growth that you are seeking.

MODULE 07

HARVEST

SATURDAY September 13, 2025

This module in Growing Your Good Life will encourage you to look for signs of bountiful growth and celebrate the tangible results of your efforts. These signs will be noticeable not only in the garden you've cultivated with this close-knit community at Fairhaven, but also in your garden of life. If you've followed this process faithfully you will continue to be rewarded with an abundant harvest of nourishing foods from the garden, and will see tangible results from this process of nourishing your soul.

MODULE 08

SAVOR

SATURDAY October 11, 2025

This module will focus on savoring and preserving the bounty of the farm. As a community, you'll learn and employ best practices for preparing, enjoying, and preserving food from the farm. By working together the daunting task of food preservation will be simplified and demystified. You'll be able to bring home ample food and medicine to fill your pantry. From the perspective of personal growth, you'll take stock of all that you've learned and savor all the ways you've grown. Like a good gardener, you'll save the seeds of insight to carry into your next season of growth.

MODULE 09

CELEBRATE

SATURDAY November 8, 2025

This module is all about gratitude, appreciation, and celebration of your growth and transformation—a culmination and integration of all that you've learned throughout the course. Growing Your Good Life will conclude with a graduation ceremony to help you reflect on the season with a sense of gratitude for the land, an appreciation for the community you've cultivated, and a celebration of the collective growth and transformation you've experienced.

Course Instructors

John & Emily Beaton

We have been farming for over 10 years, and have done it all! From growing microgreens in windowsills, to operating a 50-member CSA, to cultivating over 150 different varieties of vegetable, herb, and flower seedlings in our greenhouse, to hosting weekly pizza nights at our farm!

Our farming journey hasn't been easy—we've faced many challenges and overcome many hurdles through the years. But by dedicating ourselves to the work, growing good food, and fostering community we have built the livelihood of our dreams.

As we reflect back, the source of our resilience has always been from the farm itself. The farm has been a constant source of inspiration and has nurtured us the whole way through.

As we've cultivated a relationship with the land and participated in an ongoing act of reciprocity, we've simultaneously nurtured our personal growth and clarified our sense of purpose. The rhythms of planting, tending, and harvesting have mirrored the cycles of growth, challenge, and renewal in our own lives. We've experienced first hand the transformative magic of connecting to the farm and growing the good life!

We're feeling called to pass on the knowledge and skills we've gained over the past 10 years. And now—beyond being ready to share our practical knowledge—we're feeling an even greater calling to connect people to the farm in a deeper way. We are feeling called to share the greater wisdom that the farm itself has to offer by allowing you to experience it first hand!
